How to Assemble Clear Plastic Folding Cartons

Every week someone writes to me saying the same thing: u201cI love the box, but how do I put it together?u201d The truth is, clear plastic folding cartons assemble in about the same time as a paper one u2014 once you know the two or three moves. Here is the short version of what I tell our customers.

Understand Your Box Structure First

Most of our clear folding boxes use one of two structures: an auto-lock bottom with a tuck top, or a reverse-tuck style. Look at the creases u2014 the pattern tells you which is which before you touch it.

Step 1: Lay the Box Flat

Open the folded blank and lay it flat with the printed side up. Fold along the main creases once in each direction to loosen the plastic u2014 this makes the final fold much easier.

Step 2: Build the Bottom

For auto-lock bottoms, push the bottom flaps inward and down in one motion. The tabs click into the slots. You will hear the lock. For tuck bottoms, fold the short flaps in first, then the long ones, then tuck the last tab.

Step 3: Stand and Fill

Stand the box upright and drop in your product u2014 a socks pair, a phone accessory, whatever you are packing. Fill from the top, never sideways, to avoid bending the walls.

Step 4: Close the Top

Fold the top flaps down and tuck the front flap in. If the box has a hang hole, make sure the hole aligns with the back flap so it hangs straight.

Common Mistakes We See

Rushing the bottom lock is the big one u2014 a half-locked bottom collapses under product weight. Second is folding against the crease direction. Third is overfilling, which warps the walls. Avoid these and assembly becomes a two-second habit.
